Shipping & Marine

Area of Expertise: Shipping & Marine

The shipping and marine insurance group has the depth of specialist knowledge and the resources to provide a full range of legal assistance to the maritime, transport, and insurance communities whilst still retaining the personal touch and quality of service which the industry values.

The range of disputes handled by the team varies from claims governed by small claims arbitration and mediation procedures to complex, high value disputes in both arbitration and the High Court.

Shipping Litigation

A significant part of the group’s practice involves advising on commercial disputes arising out of time and voyage charter contracts and Bill of Lading/COA contracts for the carriage of bulk, bagged and containerised cargoes by sea. We have a breadth of experience in ship casualty situations, including fires, explosions, breakdown and groundings, unsafe port and berth disputes, stevedore damage to vessels and performance disputes. We handle disputes involving ship construction and repair and claims for damage to port facilities and shore based commercial property.

Marine Insurance

We are highly regarded for our expertise in marine liability work, especially charterers’ liability, hull (including yachts), cargo and war risks disputes.  As well as handling claims and subrogated recovery actions, we advise on coverage issues, and draft insurance and reinsurance wordings. We also advise and represent a number of the leading classification societies on reinsurance and liability related matters.
